Summary

This article reviews a few methods to lower bandwidth coming from our cameras on the network. The first item provides the greatest savings of bandwidth, and the savings decrease from there.

Lowering Bandwidth

To lower the bandwidth of a Wisenet camera:

1. Use H.265 Codec Over the Default H.264. This method is VMS Agnostic, if supported, affects single profiles, has high savings, and no quality impact.
   
   Most VMS partners use the H.264 codec over the H.265. For this change the setting is usually changed in the VMS. This is the simplest way to immediately see bandwidth reduction.
   
   
2. Set a lower VBR cap. This method is VMS Agnostic, affects single profiles, has varying savings, and varying quality impact.
   
   

   NOTE: This setting is typically available in the VMS and should be changed there. 
   If it is not available in the VMS, the profiles used by the VMS must be determined 
   and the settings changed in the camera itself.

   
   Lowering the VBR cap to a setting lower then what the camera uses on average can provide varying savings. If the VBR cap is set too low, it affects the quality of the video negatively. 
   
   
   
   
   
   
3. Enable Wisestream. This method is VMS Agnostic, affects all profiles, has high savings, and low quality impact.
   
   Depending on the camera model, it uses either Wisestream 2 (pixel based) or Wisestream 3 (AI Object based). 
   
   - Wisenet 9 Camera exclusively use AI
   - Wisenet 7 Cameras can use either Pixel or AI based
   - Wisenet 5 and below are pixel based only

4. Use Dynamic GoV and/or FPS.
   
   VMS May Not be able to use these; they affect individual profiles, saving dependent, and has low quality impact.
   
   

   NOTE: This only effects individual profiles but can be enabled on multiple profiles.

   
   - Dynamic GoV will stretch out the keyframe interval (default 8 x framerate, maximum 16 x frame rate) when there are no objects in the scene. When an object appears it will inject keyframes at the normal interval (default 1 every 2 seconds)
   - Dynamic FPS does the same as above but with the frame rate from the camera. Minimum 1 FPS.
   
   Basic > Video Profile > Select Profile to Edit
   
   
5. Lower Sharpness Setting. This method is VMS Agnostic, affects all profiles, has low savings, and low quality impact.
   
   Video & Audio > Camera Setup > Special Tab
   
   

   NOTE: Lowering the Sharpness setting from the default 12 to 9 can saved bandwidth 
   and have minimal effect on quality.
